Khara is the youngest of 7 children in her family. Little Khara arrived around noon on Sunday after six hours of labor. Mom and Dad got to hold their little one and bond with her for the first hour before all the older kiddos came home and got to meet their little sister. Five hours after being born is when I, (Dr. Ashley) met Khara. At that time she did not have a name and we were calling her baby. She was so cute, wide awake, and wanting to cuddle. She had ten fingers and ten toes. I held her and talked to her. I told her about how nice it was to meet her, and that I had been waiting for her birthday for months.
While she was in the womb, I cared for her mom. My husband and I actually care for the whole family. So while baby Khara was growing in her mommy’s tummy, we were keeping mom’s spine in alignment and setting her pelvis so that Khara had optimal room to move around and grow, and get ready for her debut into this world. We took care of mom all the way up to her delivery date. My husband, Dr. Darby and I, came on the Sunday afternoon to check mom and baby’s spine and nervous system to see how they were doing after their big performance. Khara had a little misalignment in her top bone of her spine which quickly settled when Dr. Darby held it with his pinky finger. I worked on her cranials (i.e. the bones of her skull) to align them back into place after having to overlap to fit through the birth canal. Chiropractic adjustments for newborns differ significantly from those performed on adults. You use light fingertip pressure, the same amount of pressure that you would to touch your finger to your eye lid, or to feel for the ripeness of a tomato. We also checked mom’s spine and adjusted her, so her body could heal and function optimally after giving birth.
Why is checking a newborn for spinal misalignments so important? Checking for spinal misalignments in children and newborns allows their brain and nervous system to function optimally as they grow and develop. Babies change so much, 65% of neurological development (i.e. development of the brain and nervous system) occurs in a child’s first year. They go from not being able to move or communicate well to holding their heads up, sitting, crawling, walking, pointing, speaking, and smiling. They go through so much and we at Campbell Chiropractic want to make sure their nervous system and brain has no interference; that it is working at 100%. So they can become the person they were created to be, and to thrive!!!
Now is checking babies something that all new parents should do? Yes! A Study published in 1992 in the Journal of American Osteopathic Association by V. Fryman, examined 1,250 babies five days after birth and found that 95% of this group were not only misaligned, but also had cervical strain. He also noted that when the infants had specific spinal adjustments there was immediate muscular relaxation and a greater ability to sleep.
Khara is now four weeks old and has been checked for spinal misalignments a few times. She is thriving and growing every day. She loves to cuddle, to be held and kissed, and mom is her favorite.
