Key Indicators of Men’s Health: Posture and Pushups

Men’s health can be overlooked and downplayed in modern culture. We believe in empowering men to improve their health now and safeguard their family’s future through healthy choices. Guys, did you know how many pushups you can do may indicate your degree of risk for cardiovascular problems? Keep reading for men’s health tips and fascinating studies.

Fitness and Cardiovascular Disease

Heart disease is one of the top causes of death in American men. However, medical doctors, as well as health and wellness experts agree that your lifestyle has a big impact on your level of risk.

Researchers have shown that moderate to vigorous physical activity can actually help men to live longer, while improving heart health and reducing risks of hypertension.

Specifically, a 2019 study published by the Journal of the American Medical Association

looked at 1,104 male firefighters, aged 18-66 years of age.

“The firefighter began push-ups in time with a metronome set at 80 beats per min. Push-ups continued until the participant reached 80, missed 3 or more beats of the metronome, or stopped owing to exhaustion or other symptoms (dizziness, lightheadedness, chest pain, or shortness of breath).”

Then they followed up with the participants 10 years later. This fascinating report concluded that, “Participants able to complete more than 40 push-ups had a 96% reduction in incident CVD events compared with those completing fewer than 10 pushups.” (1)

Chiropractic may not be your first thought when it comes to heart health, but it should definitely be part of your preventative lifestyle! Adjustments have been proven to have a positive effect on your nervous system, by relieving stress and helping your body move into a more parasympathetic or relaxed state.

When your body is in proper alignment, parasympathetic function is improved, allowing your body to heal, perform and recover more efficiently. Often blood pressure and heart rate will be lowered along with heart rate variability improvements (a measure of how stressed you are and how well you can adapt to life demands).

Men’s Posture with Chiropractic Tips

It’s not just how strong you are or how active; how you sit and stand matters too!

Another study, published by the Archives of Internal Medicine in 2006, followed over four thousand men for 20 years. Each person’s posture was monitored and assessed, along with their health risks associated with poor posture.

“The men who experienced the greatest posture deviations and height loss over the 20 year period experienced a 64% higher risk of developing coronary heart disease. The heart was directly influenced by poor posture because of the relationship between the posture, spine, and nervous system.” (2)

Problems from poor posture accumulate over and compound over years, so it’s important to take action as soon as possible.

As chiropractors, we are trained to look to the source of poor posture, correcting your structure and foundation: the spinal cord.

Men’s Health: The Effect on the Family

Historically, men have been the physical protectors of their families. In modern times, there’s often less danger to fight off, and safeguarding our children’s future looks different.

At Campbell Chiropractic, we’re dedicated to empowering men to take action and make healthy choices. This includes getting adjusted, eating well, being physically fit, and being stable financially.

There’s a couple ways that Dr. Darby has been doing this. First, he gets a full spine adjustment weekly, with tune-ups as needed in between. This makes sure that his nervous system can function optimally, without interference or pressure from misaligned bones.

Second, he’s been participating in the 75 Hard Challenge. This involves daily hard workouts, drinking water, reading, eating well, and taking progress photos for accountability. In the last 5 months, Dr. Darby has seen a lot of positive mental and physical changes from adding this much intention to his health

When men make healthy choices, it has a bigger impact as you become a role model for your children (or the next generation, if you don’t have kids of your own.) This is how we can be modern day leaders and protectors!

What our Campbell Chiropractic patients say:

The staff are incredible-Dr. Darby really knows his craft. Without a doubt my body is in a better place now. After one session I realized I was constantly living in a pain that I had just kind of become used to. After every session my anxiety is  decreased, and my neck pain is substantially decreased. The staff are also very personable and flexible! They make a point to call everyone by their first name the moment you walk in the door, and are very accommodating with schedule changes. Couldn’t recommend them higher. If you are looking for a family friendly, cheerful, and generous health experience, look no further.” – Joe V.
